Effects of Shoe Collar Height on Ankle Joint Kinematics and Kinetics during Side-cutting Task

  • Chronic ankle instability (CAI) is the most common injury in basketball, which could lead to high risk for recurrent ankle sprains. High-top shoes are commonly used to prevent ankle sprains, but it is still unclear whether they have a protective effect on CAI. The effects of shoe collar height on ankle joint kinematics and kinetics during side-cutting task in individuals with and without chronic ankle instability should be determined. Thirteen participants with CAI and 13 healthy control participants wore high-top and low-top basketball shoes performed side-cutting task, ankle kinematics and kinetics data were collected by using motion capture system and force platform. Wearing high-top shoes resulted in smaller peak ankle inversion angle, perk ankle inversion velocity and total range of inversion during side-cutting task for both CAI and control groups. Wearing high-top basketball shoes could improve the lateral stability and reduce the risk of ankle sprains for both individuals with and without CAI.
