Application Research of Cloud Pattern in Footwear Design

    Abstract:
Objective This study aims to enhance the visual translation and craft integration of cloud patterns in modern footwear design. Through quantitative analysis and design experiments, it identifies key design elements influencing consumer perception and purchase behavior, proposes market-oriented differentiated strategies, and explores effective approaches for transforming traditional motifs in contemporary products, ultimately strengthening the cultural value and market competitiveness of footwear.
Methods Guided by consumer cognition theory, a mixed-methods approach was adopted, integrating questionnaires, focus group interviews, and experimental design. A structured survey of 204 target consumers analyzed their aesthetic preferences, cultural identity, and purchase intention. Subsequently, 12 representative users participated in semi-structured focus group interviews to explore attitudes toward pattern complexity, color matching, and craftsmanship types. Four differentiated footwear schemes—Intricate Embroidered Splendor, Subtle Relief Carving, Gilded Deconstruction, and Ethereal Ambience Creation—were designed and evaluated by 20 respondents with industry backgrounds or high fashion sensitivity. Ratings were collected on visual appeal, cultural identity, and purchase intention. Structural equation modeling (SEM) was employed to validate the influence mechanisms of design variables on consumer cognition and behavioral intentions.
Results Key findings include: (1) Pattern complexity, color matching, and craftsmanship significantly enhanced visual appeal (β=0.46, p<0.01; β=0.31, p<0.05; β=0.38, p<0.01); (2) Visual appeal had the strongest direct effect on purchase intention (β=0.52, p<0.01), while cultural identity also positively influenced purchase decisions (β=0.41, p<0.01) and brand loyalty (β=0.49, p<0.01); (3) Among the four design schemes, “Ethereal Ambience Creation” featuring simplified cloud patterns and relief embossing achieved the highest scores in visual appeal (5.47±0.75) and purchase intention (5.35±0.80), demonstrating the greatest market potential by balancing traditional imagery with modern aesthetics; (4) Consumer preferences varied significantly by age: the 20−29 group favored minimalist and modern styles, while those over 30 valued cultural depth and craftsmanship quality more.
Conclusion A differentiated design strategy framework was constructed, integrating brand culture empowerment, market segmentation orientation, narrative marketing innovation, and dynamic customization services. Its feasibility was validated through two design practice series, "Tracing Clouds" and "Heritage Rhythm". The study confirms that the effective transformation of cloud patterns in modern footwear requires a synergy between cultural symbol translation and consumer cognitive mechanisms, bridging traditional aesthetics with contemporary craft and market demands. This research provides empirical evidence and practical pathways for the innovative application of traditional cultural elements in fashion products. Future studies may further explore cross-cultural perspectives, intelligent customization, and sustainable materials.
